Xiaomi, the country’s most trusted Smartphone X AIoT brand, in partnership with NGO SAAHAS, launched a 3-year program to combat ocean-bound plastics and enhance waste management across 12 Gram Panchayats in Kundapura and Baindoor taluks, Udupi district. The initiative focuses on sustainable waste practices and marine conservation, including efficient waste collection, community-led cleanups, river protection via trash barriers, fishing community engagement, and enhanced Solid Waste Management facilities.
The surge in population, urban development, and tourism has spurred the buildup of plastic waste, posing a critical threat to coastal ecosystems and the environment. Through this campaign, Xiaomi India strives to curb ocean-bound plastics and advocate effective waste management practices. The initiative aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to fight against plastic pollution and climate change. It will be executed by an on-ground team consisting of Project Coordinators, Field Supervisors, and Gram Panchayat personnel. This initiative aims to induce behavioral change, enhance capacity, build robust infrastructure, and establish a sustainable system for waste collection and processing.

The program aims to divert approximately 2300 kgs of dry waste daily from landfills and water sources, consequently mitigating carbon emissions and their impact on climate change. It will further enhance community awareness around blue flag beaches, fostering efforts to safeguard these shores from plastic pollution and sustain the marine ecosystem.
