Three Key Tech Trends of 2022

By JC Hsu, Corporate Vice President, MediaTek

It’s always challenging to sum up an entire year of technical accomplishments and trends in one post, so today I want to highlight a few key strategies that drove MediaTek’s business in 2022 and shaped the larger tech landscape.

Powering 5G everywhere

MediaTek is laser focused on delivering incredible 5G experiences. While much of the attention around 5G focuses on smartphones, there is also a lot of 5G momentum in other market segments. Last year we launched our T800 5G platform that will bring super-fast, reliable 5G to Industrial IoT, M2M and always-connected PCs. MediaTek is already in a range of innovative 5G PCs from brands like HP and Samsung, and I look forward to seeing many more on the market this year.

Additionally, MediaTek unveiled our T830 platform for 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) routers and mobile hotspot customer-premise equipment. FWA routers and mobile hotspots will continue to be a vital way to quickly and cost-efficiently bring consumers faster internet, especially in areas where there are economical and logistical challenges to laying down fiber optic cables.

Making great technology more accessible

MediaTek serves every tier of the market across all of our product families, from designing chips for flagship devices to mid-tier and mass market. We expanded our presence in the high-end and flagship segments with top-of-the-line smartphones powered by our Dimensity 9000 series, and our newest Dimensity 9200 that set new expectations for flagship 5G experiences. MediaTek will continue to push technical milestones and experiences while we also continue our goal to deliver great technology that is accessible to everyone.

For example, in 2022 we also expanded our Dimensity series with chips for mid-tier and entry-level 5G smartphones so consumers can have the latest technology without a flagship price point. For our Pentonic smart TV portfolio, we introduced new chips that bring theater-quality viewing experiences to 4K 120Hz smart TVs at a variety of price points. Additionally, with our Kompanio series of Chromebook chips – which have played a pivotal role in keeping teachers and students connected throughout the pandemic – we launched our Kompanio 520 and Kompanio 528 chips for entry-level Chromebooks. It’s incredible to see the variety of highly capable MediaTek-powered Chromebooks which are also very affordable.

Bringing advanced AI to every device

Nearly everything in your house is now connected and smart. MediaTek’s IoT technology is in a wide range of devices from smart toothbrushes and light bulbs to ovens and microwaves. To make it easier for brands to develop differentiated consumer, enterprise and industrial smart applications, last year MediaTek launched its new IoT platform, MediaTek Genio. Genio delivers the latest AI capabilities so brands can bring smart devices to market faster. I can’t wait to see the next generation of fun, useful and unique IoT devices powered by MediaTek.
