India’s State With Highest Literacy Lack Basic Digital Awareness

-B Swaminathan

Kerala, which accounts for 2.8% of India’s population and 1.2% of its land area, contributes more than 4% to the GDP of India. Thus, the southern state’s per capita income is 60% higher than India’s average. Ernakulam is the commercial capital of the state while Thiruvananthapuram is the political capital. Unlike other states, Kerala has a unique model of development where the urban-rural divide is less. As the state had moved from a agro-product driven economy to a service-based economy, here are some of the leading channel partners have to say on the way they looked at cyber security.

“There is a huge avenue for cyber security in Kerala. Even within the Government, only the Police department is known for their full readiness in terms of cyber-security. I am sure other departments will also implement the same”, says Renu J Nair, CEO, RR Infocom. According to him, the reason for lack of cyber security deployment is the lack of awareness. “Even established companies fail to understand the need. Even their firewalls are not updated and are to the mark”, he says.

According to Siya Babu of Forecom, “We are anticipating better investments from the Kerala IT Mission. Also, another aspect I am seeing is the number of breaches happening in the banking and related services that have created a fear of data.” According to Siya, most of the BFSI companies in Kerala are likely to invest more on the data as they have started understanding the need for critical data infrastructure.

Despite being a high-literacy state, Kerala is unable to cope-up with higher cyber security trends. “Not having the right cyber security awareness is like having a beautifully constructed home with huge investments and not buying a lock for the gate. Such is the state of many companies here in Kerala.  In my view, I am sure more avenues are there if they are educated well”, says Suresh Kumar, a leading IT consultant in the state. Suresh says that the future is neither ERP nor system, but on Cyber Security. “To all the clients I consult, I ensure that their employees have right cyber security awareness”, I am also in the plan to kick-start an academy that focuses on digital literacy. The idea is to make every citizen of Kerala a digital-savvy and understand the risks involved in that”. says Suresh. As many of the companies are family-driven, they feel that an anti-virus can do the job of a DLP. “In my view, in recent days, many tech companies in Kochi have installed and deployed advanced security systems as the global awareness brought them there. Also, this year, we have more hope that companies would be spending more on cyber security and related businesses”, says Shafas Yousuf from Smartnet infosolutions.

More investments to happen soon:

According to Deepak PR of TopServe, the year ahead is going to have a good number of affordable investments in cyber security. “We find a slight increase in the awareness level. One reason many business owners were reluctant in investment is the cost of cyber security. Once that is taken care, I am sure more investments are likely to come in the near future.” Deepak also says it is the duty of the OEMs to increase the level of cyber security awarenes among everyone.

Mathew C George, Director, Team Frontline, says during this pandemic time 90% of the companies gone for online mode. And they had shifted their data into cloud. Customers are implementing good cyber security systems in their systems. As they are afraid of loosing data and money. Lot of malpractices happened during this pandemic time. So most of the companies had implemented or have to implement the cyber security system. They have to invest on cyber security during this time.

“Currently most of the IT heads are looking for the cheapest solutions and some had lost all data. So now they are going for full proof system and for that they are not looking on investment on implementing the system. There is a good opportunity for all of us.”, he concluded.
