A new scam is doing the rounds on WhatsApp, where users are being swamped with messages of WhatsApp offering them ‘1000GB free data’, as part of their 10 year anniversary celebration. Clicking on the link, directs WhatsApp users to a survey site and promises reward. This scam campaign is hosted by a domain, which is home to yet other spurious offers, pretending to be from prominent brands.
In this regard, Gary Davis Chief Consumer Security Evangelist, McAfee provides advisory on how users can prevent falling for these phony ads and observe to following tips to stay secure –
- Avoid interacting with suspicious messages –Err on the side of caution and don’t respond to direct messages from a company that seems out of the ordinary. If you want to know if a company is participating in a promotional offer, it is best to go directly to their official site to get more information
- Be careful what you click on – If you receive a message in an unfamiliar language, one that contains typos, or one that makes claims that seem too good to be true, avoid clicking on any attached links
